Description

Focusing on automatic phonological processing of Chinese students with intermediate Japanese language proficiency, this study was performed to elucidate the impact on Japanese text comprehension from the viewpoint of word phonological decoding, pause taking, and reading fluency. A word reading task, a text oral reading task, and a text comprehension task were conducted. A structural equation model to clarify the relationships among them was also proposed. The results indicated that automatic phonological processing is related to Japanese text comprehension and the structural equation model proved to be valid. Specifically, word phonological decoding, frequency of pause taking, and reading fluency shared moderate variances with the performance of text comprehension, and the accuracy of word phonological decoding and frequency of pause taking made significant contributions. In this way, the study revealed how automatic phonological processing affects Japanese text comprehension among Chinese intermediate Japanese language learners.
