This paper discusses the historical development of methods of English interpretation for preparation for university entrance examinations in terms of social and institutional factors, focusing on an English teacher at Sundai Preparatory School, Kazuo Ito, whose English interpretation methods called Kobunshugi had a large influence on learning and teaching English for exams (juken-eigo) in Japan. By comparing Ito's method and methods that came before and after, it is shown that English interpretation methods have developed along with the growing number of students moving to higher education, and with the gradually lengthened English texts on entrance examination questions. In addition to these factors, the competition among English teachers at preparatory schools for excellence has brought about the variety of English interpretation methods in Japan.
