Shirataki Ikunosuke (1873-1960) is a Japanese yōga (Western-style) painter. He was active from the Meiji until the mid-Shōwa period and was a student of Kuroda Seiki (1866-1924), the founder of Hakuba-kai, the White Horse Society of yōga painters, and a renowned master of Tōkyō bijutsu gakkō, the Tokyo Art School. This paper focuses on a group of photographic materials that are believed to have been previously owned by Shirataki. It is currently housed at the Maezaki Laboratory at the Department of Lifestyle and Art of the Kyoto Womenʼs University. The materials consist of about 1,500 photraphies, one diary and one letter. These photographs are not only of Shirataki but also of many other artists he had met throughout his life. The author argues that the study of these materials can enable the scholarly community to gain further insight into the contemporaneous world of yōga painting. This article is divided into two parts. The first part documents the acquisition of the materials by the current owner and provides a guide to their contents. In the second part, the author argues about the insights that can be found therein.
