日本の寝殿造住宅における植栽の特性について, 文献資料および遺跡からの植物遺存体の分析結果をもとに検討・考察した.第1章では平安時代中期, 王朝政治の舞台のひとつとして大きく発展をとげた寝殿造住宅, 特に園池を中心としたハレの空間における植栽について, 文献史料から考察した.それは当時醸成された国風文化を背景に行われた儀式の性格を反映し, 自然風景の再現を目的とするものであった.その萌芽は平安時代初期の離宮においてもみられたが, その本格的な成立は寝殿造庭園の成立をまたねばならなかったものと推測される.第2章では平安時代初期の離宮・嵯峨院と, 平安時代中期の貴族住宅・平安京右京三条三坊三町住宅の発掘調査において行われた植物遺存体調査の結果から, それぞれの植栽の特性について考察した.

This study is concerned with planting design in Shinden-style residence. Chapter I. Planting design was constructed as a ceremonial part in the Sinden-style residence. In the middle of Heian period, the outdoor space of Shinden-style residence; "Shinden-Style Garden" was conducted by means of topographical conditions. So, planting design was constructed by a phisical part of nature. Chapter II. According to the resurt of excavation studies in "Saga-in" and "The Heian-kyo, U-kyo, 3-jo, 3-cho", we discuss the mental relationship between plants and Japanese in the Heian period.
