Abstract

type:text

Concentrations of Na, Ca, Mg, K ions, and EC and pH of well water used for Floriculture around Buenos Aires, Argentina, were analyzed in relation to the locations and the depth of wells, and to the growth of plants irrigated with it. Eighty seven and forty nine percent of well water in this area contained more Na and Mg ions respectively than those suited for irrigation of cut flowers according to the Garcia (1976)'s criteria in which he indicated that the concentration of these elements should be less than 2meq./1 in the irrigation water for major cut flowers. Quality of well water in this area varied depending on the location of colony. Some colonies at south east part of this area yielded well water with less Na ion, consequently with lower SAR values. Samples of well water from Marcos Paz colony, where the depths of well were restricted to about sixty meters, showed an apparent gradient in the SAR value ranging from 12 to 2 within a distance of about one kilo meter. Analyses of well water from Jose C. Paz colony, where the depths of well varied considerably from four to seventy five meters, exhibited the following relationships among the four elements and the depth of well; Negative correlations between concentrations of Na ion, and Ca, Mg or K ions were evident at 0.1-1.975967e+00vel. A positive correlation at 5-9.507349e-45vel was observed between the depth of well and the concentration of Na ion, that is, the deeper the well, the higher the concentration of Na ion. In contrast, negative correlations were observed between the depths of well and the concentrations of other ions; the deeper the well, the lower the concentrations of Ca, Mg and K ions. Electric conductivities (EC) correlated positively with the concentrations of Ca or Mg ion at 5-1.966866e+00vel. No correlation was observed between pH and these elements. Some physiological disorders, such as growth inhibition and marginal leaf burns in Primula, Jasminum, Lysimachia and potted Chrysanthemum observed in the nurseries where water from deep wells o
