This paper estimates the income distribution parameters using the quintile data from Family Income and Expenditure Survey in Japan from 1971 to 2007 and examined the trend of the Gini coefficients, which are calculated from the estimated parameters. In the empirical analysis, we assume the Singh-Maddala distribution as an income distribution, utilize a likelihood based on a selected order statistics and estimate the parameters via a Markov chain Monte Carlo(MCMC) method. If we assume the Singh-Maddala distribution as an income distribution, the increases of the Gini coefficients can be observed in 1983-1987 and 1997-2007 in two-or-more person households and in 1971-1974 and 1984-1987 in workers'households, respectively.
