Description
type:text
The paper examines the nature of watching television in real time by observing the attitude of Japanese children in the 1970s (television natives) in terms of watching television. Whether watching television programs in real time or at another time after broadcasting (time-shifted viewing), watching television may affect people's time management to a certain degree because it is deeply involved in people's lives. Given this perspective, the paper discusses the involvement of watching television with viewers. The 1970s is the decade of real-time viewing, as after the mid-80s, video cassette recorders became popular in Japan, which gave way to time-shifted viewing. Examining how television natives had viewed television in this decade may reveal the nature of real-time viewing. Several former social surveys indicate that television natives have strongly kept television memories of this era and shared such memories among them. The paper clarifies where such strong memories come from. These may come from watching television, as viewers feel that they are sharing the same timeline while watching television, which results in sharing memories related to television among them. Moreover, in the 1970s, most people watched television in a particular place, such as the dining or living room at home. As such, television natives shared a common time and place when watching television, which creates a sense of community, even if it is in front of the television. Such a sense of community may have strengthened these children's memories regarding watching television. Television programs were originally viewed in real time, and watching television can be said to have a nature that brings such a sense of community.
