This article deals with the dispute of Christian leaders between orthodox and liberal theology. Liberal theology was introduced into Japan between 1880 and 1890 and the members of Kumamoto Band such Michitomo Kanamori (1857-1945), Tokio Yokoi (1857-1927), and especially Danjyou Ebina (1860-1946) shifted to the new theology, while Kanzo Uchimura (1861-1930) and Masahisa Uemura (1858-1925) defended orthodox theology. The main issues of the two different theologies were the deity of Jesus Christ, the Trinity, the doctrine of atonement, biblical inerrancy, etc. The heated controversy between orthodox and liberal theology culminated in the theological confrontation between Masahisa Uemura and Danjyo Ebina, which continued from 1901 to 1902 for almost one year. Although Kanzo Uchimura and Masahisa Uemura agreed with orthodox theology and refuted liberal theology, they could not establish common ground because of differences in church principle.
