大正・昭和戦前期の国内博覧会では、その余興として「海女の実演」が行われ、非常な人気を博したという。現在確認し得る限り、1920年から1940年代初頭までの間に、すなわち、大正・昭和戦前期に、博覧会で行われた「海女の実演」が41件確認されている。ところで、そのような海女は、どのような視線に晒され、どのように消費されていったのか？　そして、なぜ、大衆の人気を博していたのか？　本稿では、時系列に則って、博覧会の意味、そこにおける海女館の位置付け、並びに、それを宣伝する新聞メディア（特に、博覧会開催地の地方新聞）の言説を通して、海女に対する性的視線の形成過程について考察を行った。同時期における国内博覧会の海女館では、大衆の海女に対する性的視線が、博覧会の集客を望む主催者、ランカイ屋（イベント業者）、新聞メディア、それぞれの利害が絡み合う形で形成されていった。そこでの海女は、「奇妙」や「エロ」といった形容詞を伴って商品化されていくことになる。このことは、海女という生身の人間を「他者」として展示し、それを金銭と代替に鑑賞するという、大衆が圧倒的な優位的立場に置かれた非対称的な関係の構築過程を表している。

During the Taisho and Showa pre-war periods, “Ama demonstrations” were held as entertainment at domestic expositions, and they were very popular. As far as I can confirm, there were 41 cases of “Ama demonstrations” held at expositions between 1920 and the early 1940s. Then, what kind of attention were such Ama divers exposed to, and how were they consumed? And why were they so popular with the public? This paper examines the process of the formation of the sexual gaze toward the Ama divers through meanings of the expositions, statuses of the Ama pavilions, and discourses of the newspaper media --- especially the local newspapers of the expositions’ host cities.At the Ama pavilions in domestic expositions, the sexual gaze of the public toward the Ama divers was formed through the intertwining of the interests of the organizers, the event vendors, and the newspaper media, all of whom wanted to attract visitors to the expositions. At the expos, the Ama divers were commercialized with adjectives such as “strange” and “erotic.” This represents the process of constructing an asymmetrical relationship in which the masses are placed in an overwhelmingly dominant position, and the Ama divers are displayed as the “other.”
