空気の軸流中での、平滑面を持つ回転球の周りの流れのパターンの可視化を、垂直風洞の中の低レイノルズ数での噴霧法によって行った。球径は38mmであり、実験は主流の風速1m/s以下で、回転数は1800rpm以下で行った。きのこに似た断面を持つ螺旋渦が、回転球の後流に発生するのが認められた。また、球の周りの螺旋渦は、静止流体中でも明瞭に可視化できた。

Flow patterns around a rotating sphere with smooth surface in axial air flow were visualized by smoke technique at low Reynolds number range in a vertical wind-tunnel. The sphere has a diameter of 38 mm, and the experiments were carried out for main airflow velocity up to 1 m/s and rotating maximum speed of 1,800 rpm. It was found that the spiral vortices with mushroom type sectional forms were generated in the wake of the rotating sphere. Furthermore, the spiral vortices around the sphere were also visualized clearly in still fluid.
