地理情報科学が進展する中で、様々な地理・空間データが構築されている。その中で、個人の名前のデータベースがGISでの利用を前提に利用可能な状態にある。英国ではすでに苗字プロジェクトとして、苗字マップをはじめ、ジオデモグラフィクス研究との関わりで新たな研究トピックスを形成しつつある。本研究では、町丁目までの位置情報をもつ約4500万件の日本の苗字データを用いて、日本の苗字マップの分析と、その応用可能性について言及する。

Large amounts of various geo-spatial data have been accumulated since the GIS revolution of the late 1980s. Recently a huge database of Japanese family names has become available using GIS. In Britain, a family names project has already provided family names maps. These projects lead to new research topics in Geographic Information Science related to geodemographics. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate analyses of Japanese family names maps based on GIS, and explore their research potential.
