Abstract

Continuous girder bridges with precast members have been used relatively large number in Japan, and the techniques invalved introduction of prestressing in concrete slab or between precast girders. These bridges have improved high riding quality and smooth passage of vehicles in addition to difficulties of assuring good maintenance of hishways. However, these techniques have shown undesirable tendency in ecoromical view points because it reguires complex processes in field. The main purpose of this experimental research is to improve the construction techniques, where epoxy resin is used as grouting material between precast girders and also prestressing is introduced at end blocks. Slab concrete is casted in situ to construct composite girders. This experimental research concentrates on investigations of the connection and also the general behavior of continuous girder by static bending test. At different load steps which are gradually increased up to failure of the test beams, width and distribation of cracks, slip between deck and precast girder, compressive and teusile strain and deflection are measured, from which general behaviors of the test beams are analysed experimentally. From the analysis mentioned above, it is concluded that the proposed technique guarantees the continuity at mid-span and the girders with the proposed connection behave as continuous without reducing any flexuraI regidity. Also, the technique simplifies the construction processes and improves method of connections which will have wide applications in many fields.
