This article aims at considering the possibility of establishing comprehensive gerontology curriculums and understanding real aging process and later years through an extension lecture on gerontology for the aged and lay persons. Japan is a mature society with an elderly population, aged65 years or over, of 35.2 million accounting for 27.7 percent of the total population. The Japanese government has recognized the importance and the necessity of interdisciplinary research program son gerontology to improving QOL and good health status, etc. However, there are few universities having courses on gerontology programs in Japan, and general people including the aged have few opportunities to access to aging field. During and after lecturing on gerontology to general people as an extension lecture, their impressions of the elderly were asked and discussed. The results show that they understand the importance and the necessity of studying gerontology because gerontology is useful to understand the real aging process and improving QOL in the later years. In the U.S., the Gerontological Society of America has already been established and 37 universities have master's programs and five universities have doctoral programs in gerontology. This is the best time for Japanese universities, like the University of the Ryukyus because there are many people aged at 65or over in japan, and Okinawa is the best place to lead the aging programs to understand the real aging process and improving subjective well-being in the later years.
