Various discussions have focused on the problems of women's pensions in Japan. However, these discussions have not considered women who are in the Class 1 Insured category of the Japanese basic pension. The differences in their treatment in the pension system are becoming greater because of the changes in the social economic environments and due to the diversification in women's lifestyles. This paper considers the issue of women's pensions in Japan focusing on the Class 1 Insured category of the Japanese basic pension, aiming at pension reform.
