Text Mining Approach of the Transitions of the Course of Study in English Education in Japan

Abstract

The enormous amount of information stored in texts cannot simply be used for further processing. The development of text mining technology enables us to process specific methods and algorithms to extract useful patterns. The availability of “big data” and computational methods provides an opportunity for empirically measuring an unknown information and aim of English education in Japan. In this article, I present the discovery by computer of new, previously unknown information from the Course of Study in Japan. To answer my questions, I use text mining methods to measure the frequency of the vocabulary used in the Course of Study. This study aims at revealing the contents of the Course of Study issued in 1946, 1989, 2016 and 2017. Furthermore, taking correspondence analysis and quai-squared test into account, my findings indicate the significant difference in the frequency of the vocabulary of “output” and “input” except for “writing”. However, no significant difference is found between the use of “writing” vocabulary and “internationality” vocabulary. In other words, the aim of English education in Japan has not changed dramatically and there are a number of similarities in the past(1947)and present(2016, 2017). In this context, the findings of the study are expected to provide significant insights to guide prospective research and practice in the field and to develop continuous improvement and standards for the Course of Study in Japan.
