- A Study of Story-telling in which Learners Talk about Their Own Experiences of Daily Life : Cases of a Japanese Language Class for Foreign Nationals Living in Japan

This paper analyzes the cases of learners in a Japanese language class for foreign nationals living in Japan, who talk about their actual experiences relevant to the scenes and situations set up in the classroom practices. As a result of the analysis, it was found that this is the phenomenon where learners cite interactions inspired by the classroom practices, which they have experienced in their daily lives, and convey their feelings of surprise and confusion about the interactions. In this paper, I show why and how the teachers, the receivers of the stories, are expected to respond by expressing their views on how learners should behave in the interactions cited. Furthermore, I demonstrate the process of “learner autonomy” in which learners, inspired by teacher-designed practices, recall their life experiences, express their own thoughts and feelings, connect their own “life experiences” to “language learning,” and obtain the teacher’s perspectives.
