Analysis of Pragmatic Input in New High School English Textbooks: The Case of Refusal

Abstract

This study examines the extent to which the new MEXT-approved high school textbooks of English Logic and Expression I reflect the findings from the previous interlanguage pragmatics (ILP) studies, focusing on the speech act of refusal. The investigation results show that although many of the ILP problems related to refusal found in the old textbooks remain unsolved, we can see some improvements in the current new textbooks, especially in the model conversations.?Based on the data, this paper makes suggestions for more integration of theory and practice of ILP in general.
