Description
This study is to examine tools for assessing intercultural competence of university students inJapan and Cambodia and the impact of intercultural exchange programs. It is the view of the authors that through those programs university students in both countries can enhance their intercultural competence, which is becoming crucial for university graduates in this globalized society. This article (1) reviews the current literature on intercultural competence, (2) introduces definitions of intercultural competence, (3) explores the theoretical background of assessing intercultural competence and introduces the Intercultural Knowledge and Competence (IKC) VALUE Rubric used by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, and (4) introduces international exchange programs for university students in Japan and Cambodia, and describes the results and limitations of assessing their intercultural competence with the IKC Rubric. Finally, (5) the need for intercultural exchange programs is explained and requirements for exchange programs to foster intercultural competence are suggested.
