My impression of the forty-four works included in the Auchinleck manuscript is that the medieval period was the period of the Crusades in the literal sense of the word. So I searched the manuscript for the keyword “Saracen,” spelled Sar(r)asin, Sar(r)azin, or Sar(r)aʒ in, and found it in fourteen works. This figure is significant because in this manuscript seventeen items out of forty-four are religious texts. Next, in each item I inspected the context in which the Crusades are referred to. Finally, Turville-Petre's opinion, expressed in his England the Nation: Language, Literature, and National identity 1290-1340 (1996), that this manuscript was ordered by the Beauchaump family is presented in a favorable light.
