Abstract

application/pdf

The purpose of this paper is to examine Koji Fujii’s view of architecture in his discourses about the tearoom. In doing so, the relationship of “design” and “equipment” he catches will be clarified. Fujii considers “design” as the “atmosphere” given by “tradition”. On the other hand, he considers “equipment” as inevitable comfort which should be improved by “science”. Whilst these two are antithetical, Fujii tries to prove “atmosphere” by “science”. However, attempt ends up with his own subjectivity and obscures the boundary between “design” and “equipment”.
