Yamanoueno Okura, a representative poet in Manyoshu (a collection of poems in the 8th century), wrote "Three Poems about the Dead Boy Named Furuhi." In my thesis the three poems are studied from three points: (1) interpretation of expianatory notes, (2) the meaning of the epigraph and (3) the reason why he wrote these poems under the pretense of woman and then the characteristics of these poems are discussed. These poems were written in his latter years of 732 or 733 under the pretense of a mother who lost her boy. The fact that they were written from a mother's viewpoint gave more reality to the description of the dead boy's daily life and expressed his sorrow more vividly. An unfortunate incident such as a boy's death further strengthened a tie between mother and child and deepened her love towards her lost child.
