Abstract
In the grammar of Japanese, numbers are classfied as Taigen or a part of speech which includes nouns and pronouns. Like adverbs, however, numbers modify adjectives and verbs; besides, following the noun, they also function as a case marker indicating the subject of a sentence or joining a phrase or sentence. This paper studies numbers as they are used in classical Japanese. It is among findings that numbers are combined with nouns to function as case markers; that is their traditional mein usage.
