In the present study, we examined the dietary habit of children in the late years of elementary school as well as their parents, and also investigated the effects of provision of one week's worth of recipes for boxed lunches. Subjects had a low rate of skipping breakfast and a strong awareness of diet. However, improvements in nutritional balance and appetite were considered necessary with regard to breakfast. The results of the dietary survey suggested insufficient intake of cereals, vegetables, milk and dairy products, potatoes, soybeans, fruits, and seaweeds. In addition, intake of calcium and iron was the most likely to be insufficient. A total of 73% of subjects used the lunch recipes provided for improvement of nutritional balance, and provision of these recipes improved the nutritional balance of lunches.
