Description

The aim of this study was to investigate students' perceptions of their experience in the first nursing practicum, and in particular to investigate whether the relationship between the students and the faculty and nurse preceptor facilitated positive outcomes in terms of the goals of the practicum. The questionnaire data collected by the researchers showed that in most of the students, the practicum led to an increased interest in nursing skills and communication skills, including interaction with patients. Many students were satisfied with the mentoring of the faculty and nurse preceptors. The advice and attitude of the faculty and nurse preceptors were adequate to encourage the students in the provision of care. The faculty and nurse preceptors were good nurse models for students, and provided adequate guidance on the aims of nursing intervention. The specialist knowledge of the faculty and preceptors was important for many students, and a humanistic precepting style seemed to be equally important.
