Description

The purpose of this study is to clarify the mechanism of the anteroposterior laryngeal squeezing during phonation. We assessed the type and degree of anteroposterior laryngeal squeezing during phonation by fiber-stroboscopy in 277 cases of unilateral laryngeal nerve paralysis. The results were summarized as follows : (1) In 113 cases of the 277 assessed, anteroposterior laryngeal squeezing occurred during phonation (41%). (2) As compared to non-anteroposterior laryngeal squeezing, the incidence of marked anteroposterior laryngeal squeezing significantly increased with age in the later part of life. (3) In 153 cases in which a silicon injection was perfomed, we compared the degree of anteroposterior laryngeal squeezing before and after the silicon injection. It is notable that following a silicon injection the degree of anteroposterior laryngeal squeezing was reduced in 52 (80%) out of the 65 cases in which anteroposterior laryngeal squeezing was observed prior to injection.
