Description
The relationship between the Kaigo index and the level of independent living of bedridden or demented elderly was investigated in this study. The Kaigo index, which is composed of the involvement, difficulty, and necessity of the whole care given to the elderly and disabled, was created for the evaluation of the actual care given. The criteria of bedridden and demented elderly was established by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. 1208 disabled elderly in West Japan were selected and surveyed with mail questionnaires with regard to the 80 care duties. Various changes in score on the Kaigo index resulted from the degree of independent living (IL) of the bedridden and demented elderly. The Kaigo index and the degree of IL bore a small correlation coefficient (bedridden r=0.245,demented r=0.277). An inverse proportion was detected in the Kaigo index and the middle degree of IL. As the degree of the bedridden state or dementia got worse, most of the Kaigo index gradually became higher. The evaluation of the elderly for adaptation to care plan and care management should not be based only on the need for care, but also on the Kaigo index which reflects both the quantity and quality of care services. The eligibility criteria of insurance for long-term care in 21st Century in Japan with only physical assessment system could not be determined without the Kaigo index.
