This study investigated the longitudinal development of transitive and intransitive verbs by two Japanese L1 children and found they Produced both transitive and intransitive verbs in their early stage of development. It is different from the claim by Ito (1990) and Nomura & Shirai (1997) that Japanese children go through an intransitive stage before they start to use correct transitive verbs.　Ito’s prediction that the causative suffix －sase and －se/-si attached to intransitive verbs would occur after the stage of intransitive overextension did not observed in the data. The errors that the Japanese children use transitive verbs in the result-potential expressions are similar to the usage by L2 learners.
