Abstract

From the moment we are born, we find ourselves immersed in the diverse human relationships that shape our lives. We cannot choose whom we interact with in these relationships. However, if we were to avoid engaging with the they those we meet at school, at work, or in our neighborhoods, our daily lives would be disrupted. Social workers, who are professionals in providing interpersonal assistance, are ethically bound to help anyone who seeks their advice, even if they do not like that particular person. This is applicable to comes to them for advice, as well as in their daily lives as well. They must be capable of offering support, no matter how harsh and unfavorable the circumstances may be. In a broader sense, Buddhism refers to these inevitable situations as “On Zou E Ku,” which can be translated as “the pain of having to meet those whom we hate and resent.” It provides teachings on dealing with such encounters. Unconsciously, this Buddhist teaching has become deeply engrained in the mental structures of Japanese people. Social work, on the other hand, originated in Western culture and is rooted in Christian teachings. Therefore, I feel a sense of incongruity when trying to apply Christian teachings directly to the field of social work in Japan. I believe we need to acknowledge the differences that have been integrated into the Japanese psyche and way of life. By comparing specific examples of Buddhist and Christian teachings, this paper aims to demonstrate how Buddhist teachings are reflected in the basic attitudes of social work in Japan.
