  • Reading Idol Studies: Research Trends and Prospects from Major Works in Japan

抄録

The purpose of this article is to reveal characteristics and major currents of idol studies in Japan. In recent years, idols as cultural phenomena and as research subjects have attracted a lot of attention. To reveal that points, some important major works on this topic have been reviewed since the end of World War II. The main findings are as follows. The first is that there have been three periods in this topic. These are the period of mass culture and stars: post-war to the 1960s, the period of youth culture and idols in the early days: from the 1970s to 1980s, and the period of fan culture and group idols: from the 1990s to the present. The second is that there have been big changes in the main theme of this topic. That is to say, in the first and second periods, the main theme and focus have been the media representation of stars and idols. But, in the third period, the main theme and focus have been changed from that kind of representation to deeper realities of fan cultures about group idols. At last, it is hoped that further idol studies will be accumulated in the future from the perspective of a multi-method approach.
