  • China’s Diplomatic Endeavors: Expanding Influence through the Exploitation of Climate Change Challenges

抄録

Emphasizing its status as a developing nation with no historical responsibility for climate change, China has long enjoyed differentiated responsibility. However, with China's economic growth and increasing greenhouse gas emissions, the international community now demands a greater share of responsibility. Under Xi Jinping's administration, China has engaged in more proactive diplomacy, seeking to expand its global influence and voice, demonstrating a more assertive response than in the past. In recent years, climate change issues have been given special significance in Chinese diplomacy. Advocating for the Community of Common Destiny for Mankind, Harmonious Coexistence Between Humans and Nature, and the construction of Global Ecological Civilization, China views climate change-related assistance and collaboration as pillars in its quest to strengthen its influence on other countries. Concurrently, addressing climate change has become one of the areas where China, while adhering to its identity as a developingnation, is most confident in demonstrating leadership. This paper elucidates the somewhat contradictory position of China, attempting to play a leading role in global climate change response while avoiding significant burdens as a developing country, and examines how China maintains this paradoxical state while pursuing proactive diplomacy.
