Abstract

In a stratified society, the topic of "whether children from poor families can achieve educational success" has been increasingly discussed in Chinese academia. For children from poor families, education is their chance to change their destiny. This paper explores how university students from poor families gain educational achievement in a qualitative study. Through interviews with three university students with different backgrounds from a university in Beijing and Yunnan Province, and using semi-open-ended interviews, we learned that bonding social capital mediated through parent-child relationship, emotional support given by parents, bridging social capital, and poor-class Cultural capital specific to the underprivileged, and champs and habitats can help underprivileged university students achieve educational success. It is believed that in a heterogeneous society, even if a family is poor, it is still possible to achieve educational attainment through one's own efforts and the emotional support of parents, or by making good use of capital both within and outside the family.
