Abstract

Research Note

In the Japan-America Baseball in 2023, the success of Shohei Otani of the MLB Los Angeles Angels and Japan's victory in the World Baseball Classic (WBC), a national competition, are attracting a lot of attention, and the Hanshin Tigers are also popular in Japanese Professional Baseball. The team's Japan Champion for the first time in 38 years sparked excitement. It was a year in which I enjoyed the joy of Baseball. So, where does the joy of “watching” baseball and the desire to “show off” baseball originate? The author believes that the idea of“ seeing'' and“ showing” baseball was already budding in the Meiji period when baseball was“ imported” to Japan. The idea of“ Showing Baseball” started by Hiraoka Hiroshi, who founded the Shimbashi Athletic Club, was later inherited by the“ Tengu Club, ” which was formed mainly by former members of Waseda University's baseball club. This club was not a group united for the purpose of victory, but a loose association of diverse members. He is known for taking a stand against the Tokyo Asahi newspaper in favor of baseball during the “Yaku Sono Gaidoku(The Poison Brought by Baseball)” controversy that arose in 1911 after a series of articles in the Tokyo Asahi Shimbun criticizing the corruption of the baseball world. However, it rarely appears in the History of Professional Baseball. We will once again evaluate Tengu Club and discuss its place in Baseball History.
