Description

Pierre is a story of an innocent young man initiated into the heartless world, discovering sexual desire and jealousy in the depth of the human heart. Beneath its main theme of Pierre as “the Fool of Truth" against the worldly "virtuous expediency," there runs the collateral or secondary theme, i.e. a juxtaposition of heavenly love with earthly love, and moreover, as the third and final theme, jealousy shoots out of the first and second themes through the illustrations of Glen's jealousy against Pierre and Isabel's jealousy for Lucy.

Lucy and Isabel, evolving out of innocent, pure Yillah and proud, sensual Hautia in Mardi, personify heavenly, superhuman love and earthly, carnal love respectively. Lucy is portrayed in heavenly blue and innocent white as a good angel, whereas Isabel is depicted in black as a bad angel. Isabel's long hair covering Pierre's heart and body like "ebon vines" in the end is emblematic of the dark and woeful side of the human heart where sexual urge and jealousy lurk.
