In recent years, the number of working women has increased in Japan. Since the role orientation and the role expectation of women in society are often reflected in the images of women in media, many working women characters have sprung up in the visual media in Japan. To analyze the representations of single women on the media in Japan, this paper focuses on the main female characters in the two TV dramas, Haken's Dignity and No Working After Hours. The analysis utilizes multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) to critically examines linguistic and visual semiotic choices. Through the analysis of typical scenes featuring issues faced by working women, the similarities and changes in the images of working women in Japanese TV dramas in the 2000s and 2010s are revealed.
