Abstract
This article aims to discuss how obsidian was used in southern Hokkaido during the Jomon period by performing microwear analysis on obsidian artifacts excavated from Koren 5 Site in Kikonai(that dates back to early-late Jomon) and examining the results comprehensively along with that of obsidian provenance analysis. The study demonstrated the variety in how non-local obsidian was utilized in the area, such as 1) short-term retention / careful handling of the material with little microwear detected, observed in arrowheads, 2) long-term retention / repeated and practical use of the material, observed in points, and 3) intended long-term retention of the material, observed in irregular-shaped stone tools. These complex methods of maintenance and management of non-local obsidian served as the foundation of the extensive distribution of raw materials and the wide-area network of humans during the Jomon period.
