The purpose of this study is to clarify the role of museums in the formation of modern nation-states in Asia, focusing on the establishment of museum in Indonesia. Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch, and later emerged as independent nation-state. The concern of museum practice under Dutch colonial rule was reflected in policy and scholarship, and represented in museums. Museum practice in Indonesia is influenced and closely related to Dutch colonial museum practice. After gaining its independence, Indonesia under Sukarno and Suharto adapted the museum-related practices to overwhelmed Indonesia’s political challenges as a newly emerging nation-state, that is nation-building and national integration. Sukarno built monuments and museum-related spaces that drew from ancient heritage and ancient history to show the greatness of Indonesian people. On the other hand, Suharto build museums and museum-related spaces―the prominent one is Taman Mini Indonesia Indah―to highlight the Indonesian ethnic and cultural diversity. This paper examines the development process and meaning of museums in Indonesia from the colonial state of the Dutch East Indies to post-independence as the Republic of Indonesia.
