Abstract

This paper examines the concept of “education” as the “sharing of a look” in the films and video worksof the Iranian director, Abbas Kiarostami, based on French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy’s book “TheEvidence of Film.” Educational films have been widely used as teaching materials for children to teachelements of the world and ideas within consciousness. However, Kiarostami’s educational films do nothave the features generally present in educational films. According to Nancy, Kiarostami’s films and videoworks “share” with children a “look” that has “a power of regard” for the “movement” of the “real” andthe “withdrawal” of the “world.” In addition, “education” as “sharing a look” is made possible by“shooting” with film and “projection” with cinema. Therefore, “education” as “sharing of a look” relieson the potential of the medium of film itself.
