Abstract

Objective: This literature review aimed to identify variations and trends in positioning methods, specifically prone positions, to improve ventilation in Japan. Methods: A literature search was conducted using “Ichushi-Web,” and articles were extracted using the keywords “prone,” “COVID-19,” or “ARDS.” Information on prone positioning (head and neck, upper and lower limb positions, and cushion insertion sites) was collected from the extracted articles, and trends in prone positioning care were examined. Results: From the extracted papers, 11 papers were selected after excluding those that were duplicates or did not include details in positioning. The results reveal that the use of cushions in the thorax, abdomen, and lower legs was relatively prominent. However, head and upper limb positioning widely varied between the studies. Conclusion: Face and upper limb positioning varied in each healthcare facility. Providing highly individualized positioning by clarifying the benefits and risks of each position is important to offer safe-prone therapy.
