The primary purpose of this research paper is to define the features of the shumon-ninbetsu-aratame-chō (hereafter SNAC) of Takayama Nino-machi district, as found between the period of 1773 and 1800. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of the population and households during this period from a substantially detailed documentation in the SNAC of Nino-machi district. Throughout the above mentioned period, the population had decreased, but it had significantly reduced twice between 1784 and 1789. The number of males was slightly higher in the gender ratio and this balanced ratio in Nino-machi is likely to be the result of the presence of a social structure that required female labor. The number of households remained around 700 throughout the period. Looking at the number of households by type of ownership, the number of self-owned households remained stable, whereas the number of rented houses fluctuated. The average household size was 3.7 people. Self-owned houses had larger households than rented ones, and this difference stayed almost same throughout the observation period. Another demographic trend noticed in Nino-machi is that many house owners could not keep their houses. They had to pawn them, sometimes to their tenants who acquired the properties for loan recovery. Many large turnovers between house owners and renters were observed. By defining the main features of the SNAC of Nino-machi district, I will elaborate and examine the above mentioned observations.
