Description

LOWRY (1984) described a new gammaridean amphipod, Maxillipius commensalis (Maxillipiidae) from Papua New Guinea. This species is associated with South-Pacific gorgonacean, Melithaea sp., and appearas simillar in colouration to the gorgonacean. This short report deals with a criptic colouration of a Japanese gammaredean, Pleusymtes sp. (Pleustidae) , which is symbiotic with a Japanese gorgonacean, Melithaea flabellifera (KUKENTHAL) in Sagami Bay. Some examples of the criptic colourations or zoomimesis between Pleusymtes sp. and Melithaea flabellifera are illustrated herein. This species is not identical with the previousely described seventeen species of the genus (GURJANOVA, 1951; BARNARD and GIVEN, 1960, as Sympleustes; BARNARD, 1969; LINCOLN, 1979) and none of the commensal species have been found among the known specis of Pleusymtes.
