Description

Numbers and biomasses of soil macro-animal were investigated in a loblolly, a slash and a white pine forest and faunal changes in proportion to the stand density were studied. Numbers and biomasses increased with stand density, showing biomasses of 120--160g/m2 in slash pine forest with high density. In proportion to the stand density and clown closure Orthoptera, Formicidae decreased and Lumbricidae, Chilopoda, Isopoda, Araneina, Oniscoidea increased. Numbers and biomasses were large in surface soil in each forest, but in the slash pine forest with high density they showed large in A0 horizon, depending upon the occurence of big earthworms. Relationships between physical and chemical properties of the soil and the distribution of animals; and relationships between average decomposition rate of A horizon and biomasses of soil animals were not clear.
