Abstract

This study attempted to interpret what kinds of thoughts junior high school PE teachers called "expert teachers" have about the way of PE lessons. Eight teachers were subjected to this study and they took part in semi-structured interviews which took one hour to one and half hours. They made comments on their thoughts about PE such as their teaching philosophies, how they try to develop students’ skills and motivation, how they deal with students who are not good at sports, what sorts of competences they think are necessary as PE teachers. Their comments were divided into three categories; 1) their views on ideal PE lessons, 2) their PE teaching practices and 3) what PE teachers’ duties are. This study reports their thoughts about PE lessons in 1). A category of their views in ideal PE lessons was also divided into two sub-categories; 1) what they would like to achieve through their lessons and 2) how they recognize PE lessons.
