Abstract

In contrast to the uniformity of the reforms undergone by the clinical medicine education, the reform of the Japanese basic sciences education has been performed in various ways. In recent years, the Faculty of Medicine of Tokushima University has, indeed, introduced small group teaching like problem-based learning(PBL), organ-based teaching and clinical clerkship. To keep up with the trend, the School has also introduced a new basic science curriculum, which requires 3rd grade students to spend afternoons doing laboratory research in their field of interest. Another major change scheduled to start in the academic year 2007, is the introduction of medical English education from the 2nd to the 4th grades. Mastering basic sciences is critical to clinical medicine proficiency. These changes are expected not only to develop students’ research capacity, but also enhance their understanding of advanced medical research.
