According to the census taken in 1965, the population of Nara City is 160,628. Due to the recent growth of residential areas in its western suburbs, the population of Nara City is now increasing steadily. In this paper I have analyzed the pattern of population growth by comparing statistics before and after the assimilation of the peripheral towns and villages into the metropolitan area around 1955. That is to say, I have used the censuses of both 1950 and 1955. In this comparison of the two censuses I have shown: (1) The population and its density per km2. (2) The pepulation by age group for both sexes. (3) Labour force status of thepopulation. (4) The number of industrial workers of both sexes, according to the kind of work. (5) The number of professional workers of both sexes. I have compared the result of the census in 1950 with that of 1955. As to the present population of Nara City, I will treat it in the next paper.
