This report depends upon the investigations by Synthetic Investigation, 1956, by the Planning Department of Nara Prefecture, 1957, by the Congress of Nara Prefecture, 1961, and the result of 1961 made an investigation on the scene several times with Scientific Budget of the Ministry of Education. Tsukigase-Mura (a village located Soekami-Gun in Nara-Prefecture) locates in an agricultural and forestry region, which stretches over three prefectures, Kyoto, Nara and Mie, having natural feature of highland and ravine. This situation located at the borders of three prefectures exercises greatly various influences upon life and culture of inhabitants. In this region, chief occupation is an agriculture and side job a forestry. Not only agriculture but also cultivation of tea is performed flourishingly among mountains. Tea is especially an unique product here. Among fruit trees, plum have been sent from Tsukigase Plumgarden to Kyoto City for ubai (烏梅) (the raw materials of rouge made of unripe plum after being subdued a luster by fumigation). The cultivation of plum, once, decreased as a result of import of chemical dyes for rouge. But in recent years it has been increased again for the purpose of sightseeing and supply of pickled plum. Persimmons are grown flourishingly, too. Moreover adzuki bean and cucumber etc. are grown adapting to chilly climate. Mountainous regions have forest , where cutting trees for timber and producing fuel wood, and charcoal are carried out prosperously. The artificial lake being constructed for Takayama Dam stretches over Kyoto, Nara and Mie Prefectures and is about 16 k.m. in length. And by this establishment 111 houses (the total in Kyoto and Nara, besides 45~6 houses in Mie) will be sunk under water and most of about 10,000 plum trees, noted the place for its plum blossom "Tsukigase Bairin", will be sent to its bottom. I examined these houses and plum trees which are to be sunk down, and reported about them.
