The academic competence of college students has recently seen diversification in Japan, more specifically the lack of language ability as a medium of academic learning. Teachers are required to accurately comprehend the academic language proficiency of their students, without any useful tests that have the ability to measure Japanese competence in a valid and reliable way. The purpose of the research is to find an optimal way to measure learners’ Japanese proficiency, which could be easily administered in daily classroom situations. The Japanese vocabulary IRT test was adopted, and given to 196 college students, with data being statistically analyzed and compared with those of the nationwide research. It was also collated to indicate differences among three departments the participants belonged to. Although the average score of the participants was higher than that of the nationwide research, a lack of sufficient vocabulary for academic learning was observed in 10-20% of participants. Moreover, the data was compared with that of the English vocabulary IRT test given in the same investigation. Results indicated that there wasn’t any significant correlation between Japanese and English proficiency.
