Description

The purpose of this study is to develop a scale to measure the extent of an Ego-Identity Crisis State (EICS) in university students. The EICS scale is intended to measure the level of emotional distress each person has experienced in the present and past. This scale was administered to 287 university students. Their responses were analyzed using the factor analysis method. The EICS inventory scale is divided into three factors measuring personal, occupational and sex-role identities. Almost all students indicated having experienced both personal and occupational crises. As they grew older, the personal identity crisis score decreased. However, the occupational identity crisis score increased among both sophomore and junior students, while it decreased among seniors. Almost all students measured had no significant sex-role identity crisis. Those students indicating having experienced occupational and sex-role identity crises in the past, scored low in the personal identity crisis score at present.
