Abstract

A protection method for Phytophthora wilting of Cucurbitaceae, that is to cover the basal portion of the stem, the most frequently infected part by the fungi, with a polyurethane tube filled with polyethylene glycol containing fungicide, is reported. A cylinder of polyurethane foam of 35mm in diameter and 45mm high was dipped in melted polyethylene glycol (m. w. 3500-3700), containing one of the three fungicides, Difolatan (1,1,2,2,tetrachloroethyl-thiocyclohexene-1,2,-dicarboximide), trichloromethyl-tiadiazol and cupric 8-hydroquinolate, at concentration of 2000ppm of active ingredient. After cooling at room temperature, they were coated with paraffin (m. p. 42℃). A hole of 10mm in diameter was cut axially on them with a sharp cork borer, and then they were cut open along the hight to effect the covering of the plant stems. In the green-house experiment with young plants of Cucumis melo (Prince melon) and Lagenaria vulgaris var. clavata, no phytotoxic symptom was noticed, and most of their basal stems covered with the polyurethane tubes were protected from wilting by Phytophthora capsici in the inoculation tests.
