Description
This paper examines the boom in Japanese language education in the city of Shanghai during the 1930s and early 1940s. At a National Education Conference convened in 1928, it was decided that Japanese language education should be made mandatory at both normal schools and vocational schools in China. This resulted in a boom in Japanese language education in the city between 1928 and 1931. During the following decade, further booms occurred in three separate waves: 1932-1934, 1938-1939 and 1940-1942. This paper argues that there were various factors influencing the dramatic fluctuations in Japanese language educationʼs popularity in Shanghai during this time: Sino-Japanese relations, education policy, anti-Japanese movements and incidents, the private interests of individuals, and so forth. It concludes by stressing that Shanghaiʼs level of international influence made it a unique city within China at the time.
