Abstract

One of the Tosa Joruri, Suehiromasa Genji is based on Manju (a play of the "Kowakamai" group), which was, in turn, based on a folk-tale. At the same time, it also contains some elements of Kinokaion's Yaoya Oshichi. The principle of combining aspects of Yaoya Oshichi with other elements was in harmony with the parallel, but slightly earlier, development of the "Oshichi Geki" sub-genre on the kabuki stage. Making fun use of the characteristic techniques of Tosa Joruri, Suehiromasa Genji transforms Yaoya Oshichi by the addition of many climactic scenes.
